01 · Account & Data Deletion
How to delete your KopaLift account
Any KopaLift member can permanently delete their account and personal data at any time,
directly in the app — no waiting period, and no need to contact anyone first.
How to request deletion
Open the KopaLift app (or tap here on a device with KopaLift
installed) → Profile → Delete account → confirm.
No longer have the app? Email info@kopalift.co.za
from the email address on your account, with the subject “Delete my KopaLift account”. We’ll confirm
it’s you and delete your account within 30 days. What is deleted, and what the law requires
us to keep, is explained below.
What gets deleted
Your profile (name, mobile number, email, photo), trusted/emergency contact details, saved
locations, and saved searches are removed. Where nothing else references your account, the
account itself is deleted outright, including every KopaLift sign-in credential and session
tied to it.
What may be retained, and why
If you have completed payment or journey history, South African law requires we keep
financial and safety-relevant records rather than erase them outright. In that case your
profile is anonymised (your name is cleared and replaced, your contact details removed) and
your account is permanently disabled, while the underlying payment/journey records are kept in
minimal form. Exact retention periods are published in our
Data Retention Schedule — for example, identity verification
photos are already deleted automatically 30 days after review, regardless of whether you
separately delete your account.
02 · Privacy Policy
Version 1.0 — 28 August 2026
KopaLift (Pty) Ltd (Registration No. 2026/655912/07), based in Centurion, Gauteng, South
Africa, operates the KopaLift mobile application, a shared-journey / cost-sharing
marketplace. This policy explains what personal information we collect, why, how it's
protected, and what choices you have.
Information we collect
| Category | Examples | Why |
| Account details | Name, date of birth, mobile number, email, preferred language | Create and manage your account |
| Identity verification | ID/passport photo, selfie, verification decision | Optional: confirm identity for members who choose to verify; a trust signal for others |
| Phone verification | Mobile number, OTP status | Confirm number ownership, reduce fake accounts |
| Journey & booking data | Journeys, bookings, pickup points, cancellations, no-shows | Operate the core marketplace |
| Payment data | Amounts, status, refund records | Process payments, keep financial records |
| Trust & Safety data | Trusted contact, SOS events, member reports | Provide our safety features |
| Vehicle details | Make, model, year, colour, seats | Shown to passengers considering a journey |
| Device & notification data | Push token, platform | Deliver booking/journey/safety notifications |
| Location (where enabled) | Search/selected coordinates | Describe journeys — no continuous background tracking |
Who can see your information
Other members see only what the app is designed to show them (first name, verification
badge, member-since date) — never full contact details through the app. KopaLift's
identity-verification reviewers and safety operators are small, access-controlled groups. Our
payment provider (TradeSafe) and SMS provider (Twilio) receive only what they need to do their
specific job. We do not sell personal information or share it for third-party marketing.
Identity verification evidence — a specific retention commitment
Your submitted ID/selfie photos are automatically and permanently deleted 30 days after
your verification is approved or rejected. The fact that a verification occurred, its outcome,
and who reviewed it is kept as a permanent record; the images themselves are not.
Trusted/emergency contact information
Stored only to alert them if you activate SOS. Never shown to other members. Deleted when
you close your account, unless part of an open safety matter.
Security
Access to your information is limited to what each part of the app actually needs, and is
protected with encryption and strict access controls. We describe this as security measures
designed into the platform — not an absolute guarantee.
Your choices and rights
You can request a copy of your information, ask us to correct it, or delete your account at
any time from the app (Profile → Delete account). Financial and safety records we're required
to keep are retained in anonymised or minimal form per our Data Retention Schedule.
03 · Terms & Conditions
Version 1.0 — 28 August 2026
These Terms govern your use of the KopaLift app, operated by KopaLift (Pty) Ltd
(Registration No. 2026/655912/07), Centurion, Gauteng, South Africa.
What KopaLift is
KopaLift is a shared-journey / cost-sharing marketplace. Drivers who
already intend to make a journey publish it and make available seats visible to other
members; passengers find and join journeys that suit them, sharing the cost of the trip.
KopaLift is not an e-hailing service. KopaLift does not own vehicles,
employ drivers, operate vehicles, dispatch drivers to a passenger's location, provide
passenger transport itself, guarantee transportation, or act as a transport operator.
Driver responsibilities
As a driver you confirm your vehicle is properly licensed and roadworthy, you hold a valid
driver's licence, you have appropriate motor insurance permitting the shared-journey
arrangement, and you will comply with all applicable South African laws. See our Transport
& Insurance Position Statement.
Payments, cancellations, and safety
Payments are processed and escrowed through our payment provider (currently TradeSafe).
Cancellations, refunds, and no-shows are governed by our Cancellation & Refund Policy.
Safety features are described in our Safety & Emergency Disclaimer — tools, not a
guarantee, and never a substitute for contacting 10111 directly in a genuine emergency.
Account restriction
We may restrict or remove an account that violates our Acceptable Use Policy or Community
Rules, always following a report and human review — never automatically from a report alone.
Limitation of liability & governing law
To the fullest extent permitted by South African law, KopaLift is not liable for the
conduct of members or the condition of a driver's vehicle. These Terms are governed by the
laws of the Republic of South Africa.
04 · Cancellation & Refund Policy
Version 1.0 — 28 August 2026
These rules are enforced automatically by KopaLift's payment system wherever technically
possible — not left to individual discretion.
| Situation | Outcome |
| Driver cancels the journey | 100% refund, any time before departure |
| Driver doesn't show up | 100% refund |
| Passenger cancels >1 hour before departure | 100% refund |
| Passenger cancels within 1 hour of departure | 90% refund — KopaLift retains 10% |
| Passenger doesn't show up | No refund |
| KopaLift cancels (exceptional circumstances) | An appropriate refund, decided case by case |
Passenger cancellation within 1 hour of departure
You receive a 90% refund; the remaining 10% is retained by KopaLift — never paid to the
driver — as a late-cancellation contribution. You will always be told your cancellation was
received and your refund amount confirmed.
Passenger no-show
A passenger is never recorded as a no-show simply because a driver presses a button. A
specific, timed process is followed: the driver marks their arrival; the passenger is
immediately notified and shown a 15-minute countdown with reminders; only once the full 15
minutes have genuinely passed — enforced by our systems, not just shown on screen — can the
driver record a no-show; both parties are then notified. A passenger no-show does not affect
the driver's payment — they showed up and waited, and are paid as normal.
Platform cancellation
In exceptional circumstances (safety, fraud, account restriction, a genuine system issue),
KopaLift may need to cancel a confirmed journey. Affected passengers receive an appropriate
refund based on the specific circumstances, handled case by case.
05 · Safety & Emergency Disclaimer
Version 1.0 — 28 August 2026
The SOS feature
Any member on an active journey can activate SOS with one tap. A safety event is created
and an alert is sent to KopaLift's designated safety operator, when KopaLift's alerting service
is working (KopaLift does not promise continuous 24/7 monitoring or a guaranteed response time).
Automatic SMS alerts to trusted contacts are not available yet — KopaLift does
not notify your trusted contact, so contact them yourself; the app never tells you they were
notified unless that's actually true. The app then
prompts you to call 10111 using your phone's own dialler.
KopaLift never places this call for you and is not part of the call in any way.
KopaLift is not an emergency service and does not dispatch help. In a
genuine emergency, always contact 10111 (or the relevant emergency service) directly and
immediately — do not wait on the KopaLift app.
Reporting a member
Any member can report another for harassment, a no-show, unsafe driving, or another
concern. Submitting a report never automatically restricts anyone's account —
every report is reviewed by a human operator, who alone can decide to restrict an account.
What our safety features are not
Not a substitute for your own judgment, not a comprehensive background check beyond
phone verification (and identity verification for members who have chosen to complete it),
not a live location-tracking service, and not an emergency response service.
06 · Acceptable Use Policy
Version 1.0 — 28 August 2026
You must not
- Provide false information when registering, verifying identity, or publishing a journey.
- Harass, threaten, discriminate against, or behave abusively towards another member.
- Drive unsafely, impaired, or in an unroadworthy or improperly licensed vehicle.
- Use KopaLift to arrange or transport anything illegal.
- Circumvent KopaLift's payment system.
- Submit a false report, or falsely declare a no-show outside the genuine process.
- Attempt to access another member's account or personal information.
- Interfere with, reverse-engineer, or abuse KopaLift's systems.
- Create more than one account, or re-register after a restriction/removal.
Consequences
A confirmed violation, following human review, may result in a warning, temporary
restriction, or permanent removal, depending on severity. Restriction never automatically
cancels existing accepted bookings or journeys.
08 · Data & Communications Disclosure
Version 1.0 — 28 August 2026
The external services KopaLift uses, and exactly what each one handles:
| Service | Purpose | What it receives |
| TradeSafe | Payments, held in escrow | Payment amount, method (never stored by KopaLift), booking identifiers |
| Twilio | OTP SMS and, separately, trusted-contact SOS alerts (SOS alerts not available yet) | Phone number, message content — two independent uses of the same provider |
| Google Maps Platform | Address search, geocoding, routes | Location queries — not your KopaLift identity |
| Supabase | Secure storage and sign-in for the app | Your account and app data, access-controlled per member |
| Push notifications | Apple/Google device push | Short title/body only — never payment amounts or full messages |
| Netlify | Marketing website hosting | No member data |
None of these providers receive your information for their own marketing purposes, and
KopaLift does not sell member information to anyone.
09 · Complaints, Disputes & Resolution Procedure
Version 1.0 — 28 August 2026
A deliberately lightweight process, matched to KopaLift's current size. Most situations are
handled automatically by the platform's own rules; genuine exceptions go to a real person.
What goes to human review
- Driver no-shows (refund processed by our team).
- Member reports — always reviewed before any account action.
- Safety events (SOS activations).
- Platform-initiated journey cancellations.
- Payment/refund disputes not already resolved automatically.
- Account restriction appeals.
How to raise something
In the app, use "Report an issue" on a journey/booking. For an immediate safety emergency,
use SOS in the app and/or contact 10111 directly. For anything else — questions, complaints,
or support — contact us at info@kopalift.co.za.
Escalation
For matters relating to your personal information, you also have the right to lodge a
complaint with South Africa's Information Regulator under POPIA.
10 · Data Retention Schedule
Version 1.0 — 28 August 2026
How long we keep different categories of information, based on purpose, necessity, safety,
business/financial requirements, dispute requirements, and data-minimisation.
| Category | Retention |
| Account/profile information | 2 years after account closure |
| Journey/booking/payment/refund/cancellation records | 5 years |
| Safety incidents and reports | 5 years |
| Dispute/support records | 5 years |
| Verification decision/audit record | 5 years |
| Identity-document and selfie evidence | 30 days after verification/rejection |
| Trusted/emergency contact information | Deleted on account closure, unless an open safety matter requires it |
| Marketing consent/preferences | As long as reasonably necessary to demonstrate consent history |
The 30-day identity-evidence period is enforced automatically. The other periods above
describe how long each category of information is kept.

12 · Transport & Insurance Position Statement
Version 1.0 — 28 August 2026
KopaLift is a shared-journey / cost-sharing marketplace. KopaLift does not own vehicles,
employ drivers, operate vehicles, dispatch drivers, provide passenger transport itself,
guarantee transportation, or act as a transport operator.
Insurance
Drivers are responsible for ensuring their vehicle is properly licensed and roadworthy,
that they hold appropriate motor insurance, and that it permits the shared-journey
arrangement entered into through KopaLift.
KopaLift does not provide motor vehicle insurance, does not guarantee any driver's
insurance coverage, and does not warrant that a driver's personal policy covers a journey
arranged through KopaLift.
